Tips for putting iron on vinyl on paper napkins:

Using iron on vinyl is my favorite type of vinyl to use. It’s pretty versatile and you can use it on lots of different things. Like,

  • wood signs or ornaments,
  • pillows or blankets,
  • shirts, onesies, tote bags, and more!

If this is your first time using iron on vinyl (also known as heat transfer vinyl) on anything, head to this post! It’ll teach you what iron on vinyl is, what you can use it on and the best ways to use it!

Don’t worry if you’ve never done it before, we’ll walk you through it and help answer all of your questions along the way!

What paper napkins should I buy for this project?

Any type of paper napkin will work. I found mine at the Target Dollar Spot but any paper napkins (specifically the party paper napkins) at Party City, Walmart, Target, and grocery stores will work.

I tend to gravitate towards the thicker paper napkins so I would suggest that if you’re going to buy some. The flimsy napkins are more likely to rip when pulling up the carrier sheet on the iron on vinyl!

Can you use a heat press on paper?

Yes you can!

It is completely safe to use your EasyPress (what I use) or heat press on paper. Cardstock or paper napkins, the heat settings are the same. You just have to be careful with the temperature and press time.

Which leads me to the next tip….

What heat settings do you use for paper napkins?

I pressed my iron on vinyl for 10 seconds at 250 degrees.

If you find that your vinyl decal isn’t sticking to the napkin after pressing for 10 seconds, try again for another 5 seconds. Do it in small time increments so you don’t accidentally burn your napkin.

What type of heat press works best for this project?

I’m using the original Cricut EasyPress for this project! But you can also use the Cricut EasyPress 2, the mini, or a traditional heat press.

The heat press doesn’t matter as much as the actual temperature and how long you press!

What type of vinyl works best on paper napkins?

I am using Easyweed Heat Transfer Vinyl from Expressions Vinyl.

It’s my favorite type of vinyl to use for all of my iron on vinyl projects because its easy to cut and weed!

I would not suggest using adhesive vinyl for this project. The general rule of thumb is that adhesive vinyl is best for hard and smooth surfaces (like a wall, mug, picture frames, etc). If your project is soft and can withstand heat, use iron on vinyl.

So for this project I highly suggest iron on vinyl!

Paper Napkins with Iron on Vinyl FAQ:

Why is the iron on vinyl not sticking to the paper napkins?

This usually happens when you don’t press the vinyl long enough.

If you find that your vinyl isn’t sticking to the paper napkins after 10 seconds, try again for another 5 seconds. Keep pressing in 5 second increments until your iron on vinyl is stuck on your paper napkins!
