How to apply vinyl decals to wrapping paper
Use removable vinyl or adhesive vinyl to apply vinyl decals to wrapping paper as a fun way to personalize your gifts!
How do you address your presents? Usually I just write a name on a store-bought tag and call it a day.
But this year I wanted to try something new!
And I thought applying vinyl decals to wrapping paper sounded like a fun way to use up some scrap vinyl.
Applying vinyl decals to wrapping paper is a great idea on a few different levels.
Personally, as much as I try to write neatly on every single gift tag, my hand gets tired and I always end up a little sloppy at the end.
Using vinyl means I can pick whatever font I want and the names will look nice every single time!
Another awesome reason is because it gets rid of all my scrap pieces of vinyl. We all have them and we all want to find ways to get rid of them. This is my favorite way to do it!
I can also use removable vinyl for this project which is a HUGE bonus for me! I have a ton of removable vinyl and it just sits there and doesn’t get a lot of use. Adding it to wrapping paper is an easy way for me to get rid of it.

TIPS FOR USING VINYL DECALS ON WRAPPING PAPER:
If you’ve made vinyl decals with your machine before, you’ll be a pro at making vinyl decals for your wrapping paper!
This project is so easy and is a great beginner craft if you’re looking for something easy to try with your machine.
It’s also the perfect way to use up all of your vinyl scraps.
What type of vinyl works best on wrapping paper?
You can use both adhesive vinyl and removable vinyl on wrapping paper!
I used both to try it out and noticed no difference and didn’t feel like one was better than the other!
What type of transfer paper should your use?
The best type of transfer tape to use on paper is, paper transfer tape!
It’s not as sticky as the gridlined transfer tape (my personal favorite) so you can place it on the wrapping paper and it won’t rip when you pull it up!
If you don’t have paper transfer tape, take a piece of gridlined transfer tape and de-stick it. You can do this by placing it on a cotton t-shirt until it loses some of its stickiness.
You could also use contact paper if you’re in a pinch!
What is the best way to apply vinyl decals?
To apply vinyl to paper you’ll need transfer tape, but it cannot be too sticky!
- Take your paper transfer tape and lay it on top of the decal.
- Peel the backing off the vinyl and lay it on the wrapping paper.
- Once your vinyl decal is on the wrapping paper, gently pull up the paper transfer tape.

What is the best type of wrapping paper for this project?
Any wrapping paper that is a solid color or has a minimalist design to it work best.
Anything that is busy or has a lot of text on it doesn’t work as well because your decal won’t stand out.
How do you remove the decal if you mess up?
This only works if you are using removable vinyl (which I did with the Christmas tree package!). But you are able to pick the decal off without ripping the wrapping paper. I did this by using my fingernails and it came up very easily!
I use the Sugar Paper from Target because its thick and I love the way it looks and feels. I have not tested this out on thinner paper so I cannot tell you if it will tear the thinner paper or not! I would test on a small piece of scrap wrapping paper first to make sure!
