Faux leather earrings are a really easy beginner craft to try. You just have to be careful to pick the right type of faux leather to cut, because there are different types and some are harder to cut than others.

The main things you need are a new blade (this is really important!), faux leather sheets from Amazon and a sticky cutting mat to keep your faux leather in place.

You also don’t need to download a new cut file or go searching for one on Etsy to make these earrings. You can use the basic shapes in the Silhouette Design Software to make these easy faux leather Valentine heart earrings!

These Valentine heart earrings have an 80’s feel to them, but you can customize them with any shape you want! I think they’d look really cute with layers of hearts instead of squares behind the heart (sort of like these layered ghost earrings).

The main thing to have when making these earrings is a brand new Cameo 4 Autoblade. If you use a dull blade then you’ll have a much harder time cutting through the faux leather and you won’t get a clean cut. Set aside a blade just for cutting faux leather!

Tips for cutting faux leather on your Silhouette Cameo 4

What is the best cutting mat to use for faux leather?

You need to use a strong grip cutting mat for faux leather! Anything else and you run the risk of your faux leather moving around on the mat when you go to cut it.

If you do not have a strong grip mat or your mat has lost it’s stickiness, you can use painters tape on the edges of the faux leather to keep it in place on your mat.

What type of blade do you need to cut faux leather?

The Cameo 4 Autoblade works well with faux leather, as long as it’s a new blade!

If you use a dull blade then it’s more likely you’ll have issues cutting through the material, and you’ll either have to up the blade depth to get it to cut or (worst case scenario) you’ll ruin the faux leather and have to throw it away.

You can also use the rotary blade for this project!

Where can you find faux leather sheets to use for earrings?

I have used Cricut‘s Faux Leather Sheets before and they work really well for earrings! It’s thin enough that it is easy to cut with your machine and the earrings always look nice.

The only issue I have is that there aren’t many color options.

For these Valentine heart earrings I found this bundle of faux leather on Amazon. The pieces are small but they are perfect for earrings! And there are tons of colors to choose from, unlike Cricut‘s selection.

What cut settings work best on faux leather?

I always like to try the settings that the Silhouette Design Studio recommends before tweaking them.

To do this, make sure you hit TEST when you’re in the SEND tab.

If your blade doesn’t give you a clean cut through your faux leather, then adjust your settings and try again.

If this happens to me I usually find moving the blade depth up one is all I need to get a clean cut.

How big should faux leather earrings be?

It really depends on what you like but I tend to like my earrings no more than 2 inches long.

The width depends on the height but as a general rule of thumb I don’t like my earrings wider than 2 inches.

This is just what looks good for me but I suggest trial and error to see what size you like best!

What is the difference between faux leather sheets and faux leather remnants?

You need to be very careful when it comes to making sure you buy the right kind of faux leather for earrings!

I went to Hobby Lobby once and decided to buy faux leather remnants for earrings. Remnants are much thicker than sheets and are very very hard for the Cameo 4 Autoblade to cut through.

Make sure you’re buying sheets because they’re thinner and much easier to cut.

What are the tiny hairs on the edge of faux leather earrings and how do you get rid of them?

Tiny hairs happen when your blade doesn’t make a clean cut.

This is usually because your blade is dull, which is why I suggest to use a brand new blade when cutting faux leather.

You can get rid of the hairs by cutting them off with scissors, but you’ll probably still have a few rouge ones hanging around after.

To get rid of them altogether, use a brand new blade when cutting earrings!
