Start prepping for your 4th of July party with this cheap and colorful USA wooden door hanger!
Every year I say that I’m not going to decorate for the 4th of July but I end up (very last minute) decorating my home.
We’ve got less than a week left and I’m scrambling for a few things to make it a little festive around our house.
Luckily, door hangers and wreaths are the perfect cheap craft to do in such a short amount of time. Plus, who doesn’t want to walk up to a door all decked out in 4th of July gear?
I found this USA wooden door hanger at Hobby Lobby a few weeks ago and bought it without having any idea what I wanted to do with it. My in-laws were coming in the next week so I figured I’d ask my mother-in-law if she had any ideas.
She’s incredibly crafty and always has fun ideas for projects. In fact, she pretty much came up with the idea for this door hanger for me.
My sleep-deprived brain just wasn’t working properly. Thank goodness for other crafty family members!
Multiple paint colors and a gold pen later, I had a really easy and cute 4th of July door hanger for my house!
This door hanger came in right under $5 because everything else I already had at home. And really, how can you talk yourself out of making one when it’s this cheap?
You don’t even need to hang it on top of a wreath if you don’t want to! I only did because my door is red and it blended in a bit.
Common questions when making this USA Wooden Door Hanger:
How do you paint your USA Wooden Door Hanger with multiple colors when all the different elements are attached to each other?
Carefully.
No really! You just have to be careful. I had paint bleeding in certain spots because I wasn’t paying attention but I just went back over them with the correct color and it turned out fine.
My biggest piece of advice is to grab small paint brushes to do the words and the starts. Nothing too large or you’ll have a bigger chance of the paint bleeding and smudging!
How do you make certain elements of the wooden sign stand out?
Outline!! I outlined certain letters on my no soliciting sign and it really made the words pop. For this door hanger I used a gold pen and outlined the blue starts. It really made them stand out against the blue “United We Stand” phrase, otherwise it all would have blended in.
What did you use for the stripes and dots on the stars?
Years ago I bought a paint pen from the craft store and I always keep a few in my craft room. They come in handy when you want to make small designs on projects but can’t get the desired design with a paint brush!
