If you are looking for unique or unconventional baby shower ideas, throw a virtual baby shower! It’s the perfect solution for family and friends that live far away from each other but still want to be part of the festivities.

Virtual Baby Shower Ideas

When my in-laws started throwing around the idea of a virtual baby shower, I will admit I was a bit skeptical.  I appreciated the thought and the excitement over the new baby, but I’d never heard of this type of shower before and wasn’t sure how it was going to work.

We did a lot of research to find out how this would work, but there wasn’t a ton of information on how to throw a virtual baby shower. So we figured it out as we went.

Having family on opposite sides of the United States doesn't matter anymore when you can use apps like Skype to throw a mommy-to-be a virtual baby shower!

Chris’s family lives on the West coast and my family is on the East so we wanted a way to involve Chris’s family in the festivities. In hindsight I wish we had done the virtual baby shower at the one my family threw here in Virginia, but we ended up doing two separate ones because we just didn’t think about trying to do them both together.

It worked out perfectly though and it was a lot of fun to do two. So I won’t complain!

Virtual showers have a little more that go into them than a regular baby shower, but they are honestly just as fun!  Here are a few things we did to make sure that every party goer had a fantastic time!

Virtual Baby Shower Ideas

Wondering what you need to throw a successful virtual baby shower? I’ve put together a short list for you!

1. Care Package

About a week before the actual shower I got a box in the mail full of little goodies for the party.  My mother-in-law packed games and prizes, a mommy-to-be button, plates, silverware, and napkins, and a ton of other little stuff for me to decorate my house with.  I found this to be so thoughtful but also really helpful because it meant that I honestly didn’t have to do too much when it came to party prep!

My sister-in-law also sent a cake (I know, she’s amazing and it tasted delicious!). They thought of everything and it made setting everything up a breeze.

Laptop

You may need a techie person to help you with this but I’ll try to walk you through what we did to live stream for the virtual baby shower.

We chose Skype as our video of choice for the shower, and hooked my laptop up to the tv so we could see everyone on the other end but these tips will work no matter what app you decide to use for video!

Chris’s parents Skyped with us a few days before my shower so that we could make sure everything was working properly on our computers and tv’s. Your computer must have an HDMI cable to be able to connect to the tv for this to work. You don’t have to hook it up to the tv but it is much easier for everyone to see what’s happening if you have the video on a big screen.

Games

We played two games: guess the amount of jelly beans and the The Price is Right.  The jelly bean game was pretty explanatory, but the price is right game was a little more involved (and fun)!  Different items were held up in front of the computer and we had to guess how much they were.  Once all the items were shown we tallied up the prices and whomever came close to the cost of the items received the prize!  I was surprised at how off I was on some of my guesses.  It was kind of embarrassing actually….

Presents

What’s a shower without a few presents?  This is where things got a little iffy for me because I wasn’t really sure how it was going to work.  I shouldn’t have been worried though, because my in-laws had a plan!

A few of the presents were sent to my house so I could open them but the rest everyone brought to the shower and I watched them open each one over Skype.  Everyone took turns sitting close to the computer so I could get a good look at what they had bought.  Then we ended up switching off so that I could open a few presents in front of them as well.

If your in-laws can’t carry everything with them when they come to see the new baby, I highly suggest having the presents sent directly to you.  It just makes it easier on everyone involved!

The great thing about a virtual shower is that you can get everyone involved in celebrating your little bundle of joy, no matter where they live.  I loved being able to share such an exciting time with family and friends that I don’t get to see as much as I’d like as well as my mom and sister.

I was so appreciative of all the thought and care that went in to the planning process.  And all the crafting.  My mother-in-law made lots of crafts for the shower (she’s pretty great like that).

Virtual Baby Shower Games and Activities

If you're planning a virtual baby shower you need to plan some games and activities for your guests to play! Some of these ideas are easy and quick and a few take a little more time and effort to set up, but they're all loads of fun!

  1. Awesome!!! I wish we’d taken pictures, my mom threw us a virtual baby shower since we are in Japan. She got all our family together and we skyped them. Crazy thing was? I had the baby later that day (8 weeks ago now..). Technology is amazing, isn’t it? Also I adore your first photograph it looks great.
